Purpleheart – Wood of the Month July 2022
Purpleheart is Wood of the Month for July 2022. One of the most popular woods that I use. People are fascinated by the natural purple color. The color can vary from a very deep purple to lighter lavender color. It sometimes can mislead you when you first cut or plane it by being a very drab light grayish brown. But give it some natural light and the Ultra-Violent light will turn it to the distinctive purple hue.
Purpleheart is native to tropical regions of Central and South America. The trees grow up to 150 feet tall and can be up to 5 feet in diameter. The wood is very heavy, dense, and dulls cutting edges quickly. Since it is so dense it takes finishes beautifully.
It always seems to be readily available in my area. For me, it just depends on the color and the grain that I am looking for. I really like the deep purple shade of color. The grain can vary from just straight grain to ribbon grain or even curly. Sometimes there is some nice chatoyance. When I find a unique board, I generally buy it.
